Education majors attend conference
Nikki Hanson, Linnea Reuvers, Helena Johnson, Mariah Benn and Hanna Mahan attended the Winning Strategies Conference on March 28 at Normandale Community College. They heard presentations on anti-bullying, reading strategies and technology integration as well as other informative sessions. It was a great way to begin spring break!
2014 Education Graduates

Jane Schuck retires from the Education Department
Jane Schuck, who has taught for 11 years in the Education Department at Gustavus, retires at the end of this academic year. Jane taught Inclusive Classrooms and Reading in the Content Area as well as supervised many student teachers. We will miss her humor and her strong teaching skills!
Ruth Mason Teaching Award given to Deb Pitton
Deb Pitton was awarded the first annual Ruth Mason Teaching Award for ‘Excellence in January Off-Campus Teaching.’ Students from the January 2014 service learning course in Peru nominated Pitton for this award.

Leadership Workshop
Professors Barb Zust, Nursing, and Debra Pitton, Education, attended the CIC (Council of Independent Colleges) Chair Conference in Portland, Oregon, June 5 – 7. The workshop, entitled ‘Promoting Institutional Effectiveness through Collaboration’, provided insights and information regarding the duties of the department chair in higher education institutions.
Education faculty attend co-teaching workshop
Professors Valerie Walker, Amy Vizenor, Katrina Imison-Mazy, Michele Koomen and Debra Pitton attended a two day workshop on the use of co-teaching during student teaching. Co-teaching offers support to the teachers and aides in K-12 student learning, while providing a supportive environment for the teacher candidate as they hone their teaching skills.
